Key Standards for Evaluating Teams for Reclassification

If a team meets ONE or MORE of these triggers, USSSA EPA/NJ will closely evaluate that team’s classification. This guidance comes directly from the USSSA National office with modifications from the EPA/NJ office for our area.

Team Promotion Standards:

  • 8 scored games (minimum)
  • Power ranking of 1100 – Team will at minimum be on a watch list
  • Power ranking of 1200+ – Team will be promoted without a valid justification to remain in class
  • Winning percentage of .700 in class
  • Placing 1st or 2nd in 3 out of the 5 most recent events
    • Event director will consider the number of entries in the event
  • In class run differential of +5
  • Team plays in 2-3 consecutive events at a higher class

Team Demotion Standards:

  • 8 scored games (minimum)
  • Power ranking of 400 or less
  • Winning percentage of .300 or less in class
  • In class run differential of -4

Odd Aged Team Standards: Director reserves the right to mandate that an odd aged team not play in the B division even when playing an age up (I.E 13U to 14U) if the team exceeds the quality of B teams in that division.

  • Example: a 13B team that is 24-2 with a run differential of 5 against 14B teams will be advised to play 13A/14A

Staying the Same Age:

  • 11U to 12U, 13U to 14U, 15U to 16U is considered the same age
  • Any team returning 50% of it’s players, or 50% of 2nd year players and staying the same age must start up in class unless reviewed by the state director. If you register your team in the same class, we will move you in accordance with the guidelines.
  • If you played 14B last season, you must start as 14A, 13B also moves to 14A. As noted above, all odd age teams are considered to be first year even teams.

Moving Up in Age:

  • If you were 12C last season, you may begin the new season as 14C after review and approval by the state director
  • If you were 14B last season, you may begin at 16B.
  • If you were 11A last season, you must begin as 12A.

The state director reserves the right to examine and reclassify teams at any time throughout the season.
